The Community Fridge is for everybody!

Supported by the Community Action Fund in collaboration with ELREC and NKS, our Community Fridge initiative is committed to fostering sustainability and community welfare until the conclusion of March 2028.

What is the Community Fridge??

Our esteemed Community Fridge initiative is a beacon of solidarity and sustainability, dedicated to the redistribution of wholesome food within our local neighbourhoods. By harnessing the power of collective action, we strive to combat food waste and mitigate carbon emissions while nourishing our community members in need.

Accessible to All

The Community Fridge is an inclusive resource open to every member of our community. Currently stationed at the Whale Arts Centre on Mondays and St. Nicolas Church on Thursdays, it serves as a vital hub for food accessibility and community engagement.

How Does it Work?

The mechanics of our Community Fridge are simple yet profoundly impactful. Individuals and businesses alike are encouraged to contribute surplus food nearing its ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ dates, thereby diverting it from potential waste streams. Conversely, community members in need are welcome to benefit themselves of the offerings, selecting items they can utilize with gratitude and without financial burden.

A Redistribution Initiative, Not a Food Bank

It’s important to note that our Community Fridge operates distinctively from traditional food banks. There’s no stigma attached to accessing its resources; it exists solely to redistribute surplus food and foster a culture of communal support. All donated items must meet our stringent quality standards, ensuring freshness and safety for consumption.

Transparency and Accountability

To maintain transparency and accountability, our Community Fridge employs a simple signing-in and signing-out system. This allows our dedicated volunteers to meticulously track donations and withdrawals, ensuring the integrity and safety of the food supply at all times.
